How to become a notary in Oregon (May 14)

To be a notary public in Oregon you must, at the time of application:

Be a minimum of 18 years of age

Be a resident of Oregon or have a place of employment or practice in this state

Be able to read and write English

Must not have had a notary commission revoked in the 10 years preceding the notary application (to the date).

Complete a notary public training course within the last 6 months. (Current Oregon notaries with at active commission at the time of the new application being submitted and received).

Not have been convicted of a felony or of any crime involving fraud, dishonesty, or deceit during the 10-year period preceding the date of the application.

Not have been convicted of acting or otherwise impersonating a notary public, obstructing governmental or judicial administration or judicial administration, or engaging in the unlawful practice of law.

Must be able to pass a background check

Not have been found by a court to have practiced law without a license or engaged in an unlawful trade practice.

Pass the Secretary of State’s Notary Public examination.

            The National Notary Association is a wonderful resource for notaries from any state. They offer resources and trainings.

Online Webinar (FREE)

With the pandemic closures opening up again, the Secretary of State has begun to offer their in-person trainings again. There are two classifications of classes: new notaries and experienced notaries. If you are a new notary, make sure to take the new notary class and not the advanced class.

            Online Notary Education Training (FREE)

                        As of May 01, 2022, the online notary education training is temporarily unavailable.

The Secretary of State is working on an approved provider list for notary education. I will make sure to update this post as new information comes out.
